Benefits of Laughter
It has long been recognized that laughter can have powerful health benefits however this theory has recently been the subject of scientific study. Did you know that laughter is thought to be able to bring about the following effects?
- Reduced levels of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones cause blood vessels to constrict and can hinder immune activity.
- Reduced levels of dopamine, which is involved in stress reactions.
- Increased endorphins (neurotransmitters which have analgesic effects and give an increased sense of wellbeing) making you feel happier and less anxious. Studies have also indicated that laughter can produce temporary pain relieving effects.
- Increased T-cell and antibody counts, boosting your immune system.
- Muscle relaxation, making you feel less tense and stressed, with improved energy levels.
- Aerobic effects similar to exercise i.e. increased (pulse) heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate. This can:
- Increase the amount of oxygen reaching our tissues, thus enhancing general wellbeing.
- Improve cardiovascular function and perhaps help protect against cardiovascular disease.
