Scotland's Health Statistics

The Centre of Health and Wellbeing was set up to improve the health and wellbeing of the people of Scotland. The Scottish Government’s document “Equally Well” highlights that health issues remain a significant challenge for people living in Scotland. Radical action is required to address this problem, and this action must come from a range of partners, including those in the “third” sector.
To put this into perspective, Scotland has (per capita):

  • The highest proportion of overweight children in Europe.

  • The second highest proportion of overweight adults in the world.

  • One of the highest incidences of heart attack in the world.

There are currently around 2 million people in Scotland with long-term conditions e.g. Diabetes, Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Depression and Obesity.  Life expectancy remains lower in Scotland than the European average, by almost one year for men and almost two years for women. Extensive research has been carried out which highlights the link between socio-economic status, quality of life and life expectancy.
Some of these findings, in respect of diabetes, can be found at:-

To help tackle Scotland’s health problems we launched our product 'Why' (Wellbeing, Health and You). 'Why'aims to deliver a range of health and wellbeing services to organisations. We offer outreach health services to the business community, with bespoke programmes combining medical checks, nutrition advice and complementary therapies. Surplus generated from our trading activities is reinvested into providing the same preventative health service for disadvantaged local communities.
