The Centre of Health and Wellbeing (CHWB) offers patients with diabetes a bespoke programme of health improvement, allowing them to take control of their lifestyle and to enhance their existing healthcare treatments.
Individuals attending the project will initially have a full clinical health assessment. This will inform a specifically designed programme of wellness education focusing on self-management, motivational guidance, nutrition, complementary therapies and relaxation techniques. The individual’s programme will be implemented over a 12-week period, with each individual visiting the project once a week for 2 hours.
Independent evaluation will be conducted by Edinburgh University to assess the pilot project on a range of criteria such as HbA1c, blood pressure, weight, cholesterol and cost-effectiveness. If successful it is envisaged that the project will then be established on a permanent basis.
This proposal builds on the success of an NHS Lothian service set up and run by Dr Lubna Kerr, for black and ethnic minority people with diabetes. This won the 2006 DAWN award, an international award given to services improving the lives of patients with diabetes. The Centre of Health and Wellbeing has already secured some funding to help implement this Diabetes Lifestyle Pilot Project.
