The Diabetes Lifestyle Pilot Project
The Centre of Health and Wellbeing is continuing to raise funds to support it’s recently launched diabetes pilot project in the Lothian area. Three locations characterised by high levels of both social deprivation and ill-health have been identified.
Individuals attending the programme will have an initial, full clinical health assessment. This will inform a bespoke programme of wellness education focusing on self management, nutrition, complementary therapies, relaxation techniques and exercise. The individual’s programme will be implemented over a twelve-week period, with each individual visiting the project once each week.
Independent evaluation will be conducted to assess the pilot project on a range of criteria, including cost-effectiveness. It is envisaged that the project will then be established on a permanent basis.
This project builds on the success of an NHS Lothian service set up and run by Dr Lubna Kerr for black and ethnic minority people with diabetes. This won the 2006 DAWN award, an international award given to services improving the lives of patients with diabetes.
